Day 3: Kickin' It Old Skool Blog Challenge

Throughout December I am Kickin’ It Old Skool with Jamie Ridler, Shannon Ridler, and a whole group of other creative bloggers. We’re bringing back the days when blogging was fun and not just another chore on the social media frontier. Join in any time! The more the merrier.

It's a color discussion today and there's also a swap involved so hop on over to Kickin' It Old Skool if you want to participate!

[ RED ]

What's the first thing you think of when you think of red? Vibrance.
Closest red thing to you? My shirt. (It's my first donning of a Christmas shirt this season.)
What is the last thing that made you angry? Something that happened in a book I'm reading.
Are you a fan of romance? In real life, yes! In books, eh.
Do you have a temper? Someone once told me I am 98.7% Care Bear, which leaves 1.3% remaining, so yes, I'd say I have a temper, but not until I've let it really stack up.

What's the first thing you think of when you think of green? Grass.
Closest green thing to you? An XBOX game in its signature green case.
What's your favourite green environment? My backyard. Lots of grass and trees.
Are you jealous of anyone right now? Yep. Pocketful of Joules. An old friend with a great personality. What am I jealous of? The way she has so quickly grown an online following while I've been here quietly for years.
Are you a lucky person? Yes. In fact, I bought a silver ring over the summer that says "lucky" as a reminder.

What's the first thing you think of when you think of purple? It's my favorite color. Although I don't wear it much or decorate with it. Hmmm...
Closest purple thing to you? A magic wand- a clear thing filled with liquid, purple balls, stars, and moons. Someone I used to work with gave it to me and I still keep it on my desk at home.
Do you like being treated like royalty? Hmmm... I have trouble being the center of attention I think, but on the other hand I love a good massage, so the pampering part wouldn't be so bad.
Do you like mysterious things? Yes. Oh my, yes.
Are you intuitive? Yes.

[ BLUE ]

What's the first thing you think of when you think of blue? Jeans. I'm a comfort kind of girl.
Closest blue thing to you? Um... jeans.
Are you good at calming people down? I think so.
What's your favourite body of water (i.e. lake, ocean, etc)? I like streams, especially if they have stones you can step across.
What was the last thing that made you cry? I don't remember, but I'm pretty sure it was only last week.
Are you a logical thinker? Sometimes.

What's the first thing you think of when you think of yellow? Happiness and sunshine.
Closest yellow thing to you? A toy tractor.
What was one of the happiest times of your life? A day last month when everything felt like it was in place and my 7 (is it 7 already?) year old love felt brand new.
What's your favourite holiday? Christmas Eve. There is a peacefulness and an anticipation like no other day of the year.
What makes you happy? Simple things- a new book, a phone call with a good friend, a snuggle from my hubby or sons.

[ PINK ]

What's the first thing you think of when you think of pink? Girly.
Closest pink thing to you? The Barbies I am finally letting go of from my childhood. (Fine. If you must know, I'm keeping some of them.)
What sweet things do you like? Dark chocolate nonpareils. Hot chocolate with marshmallows. Fantasy perfume.
Are you sensitive? Yes.
What is your favourite flower? Peach roses and Gerber daisies.
Does you have a crush on someone? My husband. Is that corny? Probably. I don't care. He kind of rocks.

What's the first thing you think of when you think of orange? Bold.
Closest orange thing to you? Do peach carnations count?
Do you dress up for Halloween? No. There's something about adults in Halloween costumes that freaks me out a little.
What gives you the warm fuzzies? Oooh... the phrase "warm fuzzies." :)
What would your superpower be? Intuition and super strength. Can I have both?

What's the first thing you think of when you think of brown? Earth.
Closest brown thing to you? My eyes and hair.
What is your favourite type of chocolate? Dark.
What makes you feel grounded? Time outside. Alone time for introspection.
Paint the wood or always leave it au naturel? Stain it dark and let the grain shine through.

What's the first thing you think of when you think of white? Clean.
Closest white thing to you? My phone.
Do you always try to keep the peace? Yes. I really dislike conflict.
Do you like to play in the snow? Yes, as long as I'm bundled appropriately.
Are you afraid of going to the doctors or dentist? The dentist. Totally hate that scraping thing.

What's the first thing you think of when you think of black? Darkness.
Closest black thing to you? My computer.
Are you sophisticated or silly? Silly, definitely.
Do you have a lot of secrets? A lot? I don't think so. Some? Certainly.
What's the new black? Authenticity.

Phew! That's a long list. Your turn. What is your favorite color? What do these colors make you think of?

Old Skool Badge Rounded with stars 200 x 200

  1. I love how you are getting rid of your childhood barbies...but keeping some. It's so hard to let go of the things we've loved or things that have "identified" us at a certain time in our lives.

  2. It was a long list, wasn't it?! With each color I finished, I kept thinking, surely this is the last one! It kind of reminded me of driving across Texas - it never ends ;) In a good way, of course lol!

...and I don't think it is corny to have a crush on your husband. One of the things that I love to see is people who are celebrating their love and their relationships. I think we get these messages and images from our culture that presents love and marriage as a sometimes pretty negative thing, and I love when people are countering it by being unashamed of their love <3

  3. I love how you describe Christmas Eve. It really is a magical time.

Confirm Your Humanity

I type my email address into the box and click. Another screen pops up: “Confirm your humanity.” I check a box and it is done. Humanity confirmed. But I wonder what am I doing in my life today to confirm my humanity?

What It’s Really Like to Have Anxiety

“People who need help sometimes look a lot like people who don’t need help.” -Glennon Doyle
I can’t say with any certainty that I am viewed as having it all together. I have, however, been complimented for my ability to remain calm or to calm others. In my days as a project manager, it was a strength often highlighted in my performance reviews. One supervisor actually used to mistake my calm attitude for a lack of understanding the urgency of the issue, until he learned I very much understand the urgency, but can’t address it if I get frantic.

During my application process to become a Hospice volunteer, the coordinator told me after speaking to my three references that she had never seen a single word used so consistently to describe someone. What word is that, I asked. “Calm. Every single person commented on how calm you are.”

Calm. That is a marvelous state.

Imagine how it must feel to be known for being calm and to hold a diagnosis of anxiety. It sometimes feels that my entire sel…
